Exploring the Ohio & Erie Canal in Cuyahoga Valley National Park

During our family vacation, we made a stop at Cuyahoga Valley National Park to experience the historic Ohio & Erie Canal.

Walking along the towpath, it was easy to imagine the days when mule-drawn canal boats carried goods through Ohio, connecting communities and fueling the state’s economic growth.

The park does an outstanding job interpreting this history. Interactive exhibits, detailed trail maps, and a large three-dimensional relief map help visitors understand how the canal followed the Cuyahoga River through the valley.

As someone passionate about New York’s Erie Canal, it was fascinating to compare the two waterways. Although built for different regions, both canals transformed transportation, encouraged settlement, and played vital roles in America’s expansion.

Today, the Ohio & Erie Canal lives on as a place for hiking, cycling, wildlife viewing, and learning about our nation’s transportation heritage.

If you’re traveling through northeastern Ohio, Cuyahoga Valley National Park is well worth a stop.
